I’m editing a short profile of author Trebor Healey this week. We had some fun during the shoot (one interview was conducted while the author was getting his butt kicked in a Jiu-Jitsu match). We’ll see if it turns out to be an interesting piece.
Conor Oberst and Rage Against the Machine

Just finished a quick behind-the-scenes shoot with Conor Oberst (formerly of Bright Eyes) and Rage Against the Machine. I shot with them before, during and after a press conference they gave in opposition to the new immigration law in Arizona (SB 1070). They will be playing a concert together on Friday. I wonder how much overlap there is between the fan bases of each band . . . .

I had a fun time shooting a reenactment of part of the California Prop 8 trial with Marisa Tomei and Josh Lucas. . . in a public park. Bruce Cohen directed. It’s part of a project called TESTIMONY: EQUALITY ON TRIAL that was created by the Courage Campaign to help the public better understand the content of the Prop 8 trial.

Shooting in Uganda

I just got back from a short shooting trip to Uganda where I looked at the anti-gay bill that is making its way through parliament. I spent most of my time following and interviewing Ugandans who are putting their lives at risk to fight this. I was sent by filmmaker Macky Alston to shoot a segment of his upcoming documentary on Bishop Gene Robinson. This segment deals with the split in the Anglican Church between its branches in the global North and South.
Studying with Werner Herzog

I attended Werner Herzog’s Rogue Film School in Los Angeles last week. He accepted 45 students from around the world, and we spent three full days in intense lecture and discussion with the master himself. It was absolutely amazing. We discussed topics ranging from working with actors and writing scripts to picking locks and stealing cameras. He showed part of my short documentary “First and Loveliss” in class, and said that he found it insistently honest and penetrating as a character study.

FIRST AND LOVELISS will screen as part of "Favorite Shorts from Outfest 2009" on Wednesday, September 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Egyptian Theatre (6712 Hollywood Boulevard at Las Palmas). Director Shaun Kadlec will participate in the Q&A following the screening.

FIRST AND LOVELISS will screen this weekend at the Laemmle Town Center 5 as part of a program to qualify the film for Academy Award consideration. If you'd like to see it in true 24P digital projection, come on over to Encino and check it out. It's playing at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, August 27 and at 12:15 p.m. daily from Friday, August 28 through Monday, August 31. Shaun is planning to go to the screening on Sunday the 30th.

FIDELITY Reaches One Million Viewers

Our piece on marriage equality has now had over 1.2 million views online. The mission was to combine Regina Spektor's song FIDELITY with photographs of couples that people had submitted to the Courage Campaign. The result has been quite a hit. We knew that we had touched a pop-culture nerve when Perez Hilton featured the piece on his website.

We've finally completed FIRST AND LOVELISS, a 17-minute documentary meditation on values, attachment, friendship and mortality in rural Tennessee. We're beginning to submit it to festivals--and it's gotten into one so far.

Portraits of Sudan

Arthur Rhodes shot a series of portraits in Sudan while shooting the film "Living in Limbo." Arthur writes, "I shot these photos one morning in the Rumbek market in South Sudan. Perhaps the most fascinating part of the experience was watching people interact with the camera. Generally speaking, the Sudanese have a penchant for protocol, and one does not snap a photo without first asking permission. But once permission has been given, something special often happens."

New Short Documentary: Relief Practices in South Asian Conflict Zones

Operation USA, an international relief organization that works to alleviate extreme poverty, usually in conflict zones, has engaged SK/AR Media to make a short film that investigates its work in South Asia. Arthur Rhodes will leave in early November on a six-week shoot that will take him to Pakistani Kashmir, Sri Lanka and the Indian state of Bihar.
“Living in Limbo” Begins Post Production

We are beginning post production of "Living in Limbo." Arthur Rhodes recently returned from his trip to Zambia, Uganda, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo where he shot the piece, the first in a series SK/AR Media created with the UCLA African Studies Department. For nearly two months Arthur immersed himself in refugee camp life, exploring what it means to be a refugee through the inhabitants’ personal narratives and through extensive research.
Toward a first cut of “First and Loveliss”

Shaun Kadlec and Deb Tullmann shot a short documentary several months ago in East Tennesse. The piece is a portrait of Lloyd and Jackie, two original and complicated Americans. While teaching at the same high school they became best friends and life-long companions, and over the years they have traveled to 117 countries. Lloyd, now retired, lives in a labyrinthine house where he collects souvenirs of his travels alongside what some might call enormous troves of junk. Jackie at times tempers Lloyd’s obsessive collecting and at times encourages it, but all the while their humor and deep love for one another shine through.
SK/AR begins shooting in Africa with UCLA and The Reel Project

In August and September, SK/AR Media and its partner The Reel Project will travel to Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to shoot the first installment of a new documentary series from the University of California.
With SK/AR’s help, UCLA created the series to tell the stories of the people who live between the headlines of some of the world’s most topical issues. Our pilot piece, "Living in Limbo," will follow a family of Congolese refugees as they return home for the first time since a brutal civil war forced them to flee their country for neighboring Zambia nearly a decade ago.
